Extending it to Pambula Beach

Think yesterday The Pambula Run but not quite as windy.  It was a cross wind though, so it felt stronger.  It did provide some benefit climbing out of Pambula Beach and helped put the brakes on sliding in.  Getting to Pambula Beach requires a short 6% climb out of Pambula, after turning left at the Recreation Reserve,  enjoying a run-up to the climb, before a 9%  rip into the beach.  Think snow skiing as you rush towards the lifts, with the need to quickly brake hard to the side before you come a cropper.  That’s the feeling you get as you hit the beach entrance.  Not as silly as it sounds, particularly on a road bike and the area has a light smattering of sand on the asphalt surface.   An alternative route is to take the bike path that runs alongside Pambula Beach Rd, but that seriously twists and turns, and nowhere near as much fun as the road.  Safer,  as a lot of the road is 80 km/h. However, the cars and utes seem to have respect for those on a bike.

The surf was up at the beach; and some young skeg even took us as reliable advisers on surfing conditions.  “Should we try here?” “Yep, better break than over there at Merimbula!” I trust she went to Merimbula, realizing we had no idea what we were talking about.   If you could cycle a wave, I may be able to do it.  But get up on a board, no bloody chance!!!

As per yesterday, what comes up, must come down.  The ride out of the beach gives you the opportunity to test the legs.  I’ve decided that Merimbula is so much better on a road bike, as I can remember the climb being harder in previous years on the sports hybrid model.

Returning to the bike track alongside Arthur Kaine Drive and reaching the crest at Wheelers signals the ride is almost at an end.  Time enough to spit out a couple of more PB’s alongside the airport, spin around the Fishpen and another crack at the coffee at Cranky’s.  Bit burnt today I thought, time to try somewhere else tomorrow.  A bit further at 22 kms, this ride helps ready the legs for tomorrow’s activity.  Let’s check out the hills of Merimbula.
