Barooga to Tocumwal

Prior to COVD-19, I didn’t think a ride could be so isolating.    On this day in January, on a bright, sunny morning, there was little signs of life on the road and coronavirus was something that was happening on another continent.  The road between Barooga and Tocumwal is flat, straight and boring.    On this part of the Murray River, I think the river flats are made for group rides.  As a soloist, the only thing that was exciting was the Great Wall of Hay until I hit Tocumwal.   Tocumwal!  What a breath of fresh air.  It had curves in the road and civilisation.    Once in town,  you get off your bike and hop over the embankment to take in the calmness of the water; along which was wrapped a thriving local market, rustic country bakery and a high standard of local wines.  If I recall Kylie and a couple of friends can attest to that!  Back out of town, the flatness returns with the sight of a grape farm beyond a cattle grid the only point of interest.   This would be a fun training ride with a bunch of mates.  At a little over 38 kms round trip, it is very gentle in a dull way!  Next time we visit, I think we’ll check into Tocumwal and explore further down river.
